Monopoli

a sun-soaked city in southern Italy where whitewashed walls meet brilliant blue seas

Our trip to Puglia began in Monopoli, a short train ride from the Bari (or Brindisi) airport. We spent three days in the city, soaking up the sun at the many area beaches, enjoying copious amounts of gelato and granitas, and relaxing on our Airbnb’s rooftop terrace.

Il Punto Cardinale

I recommend the Polpette di Pane (translates to “bread meatballs” and Gnocchi.

Text the restaurant through WhatsApp at least a day in advance to secure a reservation. They don’t have many tables and fill up quickly!

Caffe Roma

When I say we were regulars at Caffe Roma, I mean we went there 6 times in 3 days. It was that good!

Espresso, granite, or gelato - you can’t go wrong! My favorite is a granita caffe (coffee granita) in the morning and gelato at night.

Polignano a Mare

This stunning town a short train ride from Monopoli is popular with tourists and locals alike. It boasts stunning blue waters, steep cliffs, and unless you’re incredibly lucky, a beach full of colorful umbrellas and towels.

Don’t let the beautiful views stop you from exploring the rest of the city as well!

DO

Cala San Giovanni

This beach club north of Polignano a Mare is a hidden gem. The white sandy beaches and clear (read: clean) blue water are hard to come by in the Monopoli area.

Bring your own towel and float and be prepared to enjoy all day here. The Uber ride is a little pricey, but worth it!
